IMMOOC crew,

It’s hard to believe that this is week 5 and this week will be the end of season 4 but it’s definitely not the end of the amazing connections, learning and best of all impact on learners all over the world!

I want to send a special thank you to Tara Martin, Allyson Apsey, and Annick Rauch for all they do behind the scenes and within the community to inspire, create and make the Twitter chats run smoothly.  You ladies are AMAZING and truly inspire me every day (and make me laugh a lot too!). This iceberg image is perfect to highlight how much they do (and all of you do) that people don’t see but it shows in your work and it’s making a difference so keep it up but also make sure you recharge and rest when you need it, too.

Our final guest for the season will be Tom Murray, Director of Innovation for #FutureReady Schools, a project of the Alliance for Excellent Education. Tom is also the co-author of Learning Transformed: 8 Keys to Designing Tomorrow’s Schools, Today. Join us as we chat about schools and educators who are pushing boundaries and doing amazing work and share insights and ideas to move your own practice forward. Join us at 8pm EST/ 5pm PST (Monday, March 26th) for what I am sure will be an awesome conversation.

It has been an amazing first week.  I have loved the videos, reading your blogs, and seeing connections to The Innovator’s Mindset, Empower and Learner-Centered Innovation. It has also been great to see the connections begin to form across participants.  Remember that you get out of this what you put into it and the more you reach out, comment on blogs, share your ideas, questions, and observations, the deeper your learning.

#IMMOOC Season 4, Episode 1

Hey IMMOOC Crew,

We are so excited to launch Season 4 of the Innovator’s Mindset Massive Online Open Course (IMMOOC) this week. There are many amazing educators returning this round for a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th time as well as many who are new this round.  If you haven’t signed up yet, please do here for updates and join the Facebook group where we will link our blog posts weekly.

To change it up this round, participants can choose from 3 books. We will focus on a central question/ theme each week- it’s like a massive open literature circle:).  We look forward to the insights from each of the books but also the connections that can be made across all 3.

How do you move from “pockets of innovation” to a “culture of innovation”?

How do we move from “engagement” to “empowerment”?

What does innovation mean for education, and how do we create the opportunities for our staff that we want for our learners?

These are questions that will be looking at in the fourth round of #IMMOOC.

To change it up this round, participants can choose 1 of 3 books.

“The Innovator’s Mindset” by George Couros

“Empower” by AJ Juliani and John Spencer

or

“Learner-Centred Innovation” by Katie Martin

(You do not need to focus on all 3, but we encourage you to choose one for this round of #IMMOOC. Full disclosure, all three of these books are with either DBC Consulting or IMpress Books, a subsidiary company.)

Katie Martin will be leading this round, but myself (George Couros), as well as John Spencer and AJ Juliani, will all be involved in the course.  This gives participants an opportunity to discuss each book directly with the author while sharing their own user-generated content.

If you are new to #IMMOOC, I would suggest you start with “The Innovator’s Mindset.” If you have taken the course before, “Empower” is a shorter read, while “Learner-Centred Innovation” is a bit longer. All (hopefully) have a powerful and inspiring message, but you are free to choose the book that you have the most interest in.

Starting February 26, each Monday night we will have a YouTube Live session at 9 PM EST (6 PM PST), that will be consistent every Monday night based on past user feedback.  The YouTube Live sessions are planned for the following dates (same time weekly, 6 PM PST):

Buy a copy of “The Innovator’s Mindset“, “Empower” or “Learner-Centred Innovation“.  You do not need to purchase a copy of any of these books to participate, but it is definitely helpful to the conversations. We will have a “selfie challenge” coming soon so get your book as soon as you can so you can win a prize for our draw.
  2. Sign up for the course (also listed below).
  3. Get your blog ready to go! (I suggest either edublogs.org or wordpress.com)
  4. Share that you are joining to the #IMMOOC hashtag on Twitter and share this link for others to sign up.
  5. Join the Facebook group.

So here we are…at the final episode of #IMMOOC for the season.  It has been amazing how the alumni have really stepped up this season and really driven the process.  Thank you to all of those that have returned, modeled their learning, and supported others to this process.  It has been amazing to watch.

In the final episode of the season, we will have Kayla Delzer join us.  Kayla is a current classroom teacher, and has an avid interest in learning spaces, and shares her learning throughout the world. We are looking forward to having her join us this week on November 1, at 8pm EST (5pm PST).  You can find the link below:

Here are the final assignments for the week:

  1. Read Part 4 of “The Innovator’s Mindset“. It is also now available on Audiobook.  The last chapter was extremely emotional for me to read.
  2. I am going to encourage you to write two posts this week.

    a. The first is to give a shoutout to 3 other blog posts that you read from other participants.  Provide a link, their social media handle, and a quick summary, as well as why it made an impact on you.

    b. The second is to either talk about the #IMMOOC experience and how it made an impact on you, or something that you are going to try differently because of #IMMOOC.  Or both.

  3. Join the final Twitter chat on Thursday, November 2, at 9pm EST.

This might be the final time I run #IMMOOC, so if it is, please know that I really enjoyed watching so many connections being made through the process.  I really want to thank you for your dedication and your willingness to finish off this process.

Amazing how quickly this process goes.  We are already in week 5 and I have appreciated the conversations and contributions that so many have had through this process.

This week, we are lucky to have an educational leader and author of the book, “What’s In Your Space“, Dwight Carter, join us for a conversation.  You can watch live on Tuesday, October 24, at 8pm EST (5pm PST).  The link is below:

Here are the suggested assignments for the week.

  1. Read Part 3 of “The Innovator’s Mindset”
  2. We are going to try a different blog challenge this week. I encourage you to write 3 posts under 250 words.  The reason I encourage you to do this is that a lot of times, educators are more likely to read shorter posts, but it also shows that a blog post can be effective while being short and to the point.  There are 5 chapters in Part 3, so I encourage you to write on 3 of the 5 chapters, but here are some prompts that might help:
    Here are some other questions that might help you from the book as well.  If none of these work, please write based on what you are passionate about.

I encourage you to finish strong!  As I have stated before, you get out of it what you put in, but I know that many of the “alumni” that have finished the process have not only enjoyed the benefit, but have made a significant impact on others.

#IMMOOC Season 3, Week 4, w/ @PatrickMLarkin and Blog Prompts

We are pumped for episode 4 with Patrick Larkin.  Patrick is not only a good friend of mine, but he is a forward-thinking leader that is amazing at building relationships with the people he serves.  This chat will happen live on Wednesday, October 18, at 8pm EST, (5pm PST).  You can watch live here:

Here are the assignments for this week:

  1. Read Part 2, Chapters 6 and 7.
  2. Do a video reflection on Twitter to the hashtag #IMMOOC and focus on either one of these questions:

    a. Why are relationships so important to innovation in education?     

    b. Your thoughts on “engagement” versus “empowerment”.

  3. Blog prompts for the week are the following:

    a. Is modeling your learning something that is important to innovation?  What do you do to model your own learning through your practice?     

    b. Relationships and collaboration are crucial to innovation, but what about working in isolation? Where does that come into play?c. Who is an educator that has had a tremendous impact on you in your career that you met through social media or have dug into their stuff from afar? Why did they have an impact?

  4. Comment to 3 other participant posts and share out 3 other posts (can be the same).
  5. #IMMOOC twitter chat happens this week on Thursday, October 19, at 9pm EST (6pm PST)

#IMMOOC Season 3, Episode 3 with @TaraMartinEDU

Great blog posts coming out this week from #IMMOOC’ers, and we have really enjoyed seeing people’s reflections.  Keep them coming!

As something new we want to try, we are interviewing an awesome #IMMOOC alumni as an episode this week. Katie Martin will be talking with Tara Martin, who will share her journey and growth over the last couple of years when focusing on the “Innovator’s Mindset”.  You can catch the episode here at 8:30 PM EST (530 PM PST) on Tuesday, October 10.

For reading this week, I would suggest reading Part 2, Chapters 4 and 5.

Here are the assignments for the week:

  1. Write a post on Chapter 4 and 5 of the book, or use the following blog prompt:

    What is one thing that you used to do in education that you no longer do or believe in? Why the change?

    The reason I think this is a good practice is to remind people that we are all on a journey and that our thinking changes over time. It is much easier to work with others when you remind yourself that you haven’t always thought the way you do today.  Please post links on Twitter to the hashtag #IMMOOC as well as here on Facebook.
